Mycymbal.com

Interview with Jim Pettit, the Owner of Memphis Drum Shop

The Key to the Success

When you open the door of Memphis Drum Shop, you are in the drum wonderland.  It’s just like a big toyshop, but the toys are all real drums, cymbals and percussions.  Even if you were not a drummer, it would be hard not to touch all those colorful and magical instruments to check if they are real.

We found this drum shop soon after we moved to Memphis, TN, three and a half years ago.  It has been the place for Carl, our drummer son, to get exposed to the real drum world and inspiration.

The owner of the shop is Jim Pettit.  He is a tall, good-looking gentleman.  A jazz lover and a drummer himself, he plays jazz and rock with various bands.  His job is drums and his hobby is drums.  And he enjoys the life of drums!

This drum shop is world renown and has many Japanese products as well as Japanese customers.  However, it does not seem to have real information about the shop in Japanese.  I thought Jim would be the best person to open my Jazz Twins blog interview series.  (I wrote this in Japanese first)
Jim was born in a small town called Dresden, TN (about 3,000 population in 2013 census).  When he was 12 years old he saw a drum sets and decided to make it his career.  After that, when he was later in his teens, he traveled to Chicago and went into a drum shop.  It reassured him that ‘that’ must be his profession someday.

He majored in business and minored in music at University of Tennessee, Martin.  It was when this self-taught drummer learned drums and percussion collectively.

By the time he was graduating from university, he became good enough with his drums to try the professional world.  With his teacher’s reference, he auditioned for a professional band and the band toured many different cities.  One of them was New York and that was where he got lessons from Papa Jo Jones, the renowned drummer of Count Basie Band.
After two years on the road, he settled in Memphis, not far from his birthplace.  He continued playing in jazz and rock bands while keeping another job.

It was 1987 when the time had come to open his drum shop in Memphis.  In the beginning, the business was slow and things were not always easy.  But he kept hanging onto his dream.  After years of hard work, the drum shop is now world renown.
‘What’s the secret of success?’ I asked.

“The service to the customers,” he replied right away.

“We treat all the customers equally well, young and old, professional and amateur.  It’s very important.  We also make sure that infrastructure, distribution and warranties are all in place.”
“Another important thing is a good relationship with vendors,” he says.

The good relationship with the manufacturers creates a good flow of merchandise.  After years of good relationship, some of the manufacturers have deals directly with Memphis Drum Shop to test their new products before they hit the market.  That means Jim’s shop is the drum trendsetter of the world.
In addition, Memphis Drum Shop does not only deal with local customers but with customers all over the world utilizing the internet tactfully.

Jim has some innovating ideas, often standing in the consumer's point of view.  Among these, the most unique one is mycymbal.com, an on-line cymbal shop.  Cymbals all have unique sounds even though it may be of the same model.   So what Jim came up with is that every single cymbal they sell has been tested and played on a video.  The on-line customers can listen to the sound of the specific product before they make a purchase.
Their website has more than 1,500 uploaded videos of recorded performance of each product, and it has been quite successful.

The shop’s staff has managed this huge library of videos putting in long hours of work, but all the staff is drummers who are simply in love with drums.

I asked Jim if he auditioned the staff when hiring.
“No, I don’t, but I see their personality,” Jim says.

For him the personality is more important than the drum skills, but the world knows that all the staff of Memphis Drum Shop can play drums so well.

It has been 27 years since the shop opened its door.  The number of staff grew from two to twelve over the years to spread the love of drums to the world.
The ultimate secret of his success is that he knows the real secret, Jim says.

“I know that women are smarter than men,” which means that Nancy, his wife, has been by his side all these years.

Nancy is the only woman in the shop to manage all the men around her.  She used to like to play house, having a little shop as a little girl.  She realized her dream of having a shop of her own with Jim.

She met him when she was fifteen years old and she has been the best supporter of Jim ever since.

I don’t know which one is smarter, but complimenting each other shows that having best partners in life as well as their business may also be the key to the success.
